My WINTER INVESTMENTS Hot List .... tssssssssss ouch!...

March 22, 2019

When I come across a piece that makes my heart go ding-a-ling, I generally know I've hit the jackpot!!

I pride myself on my conscienceness, and considered thoughts around what and how I spend in my wardrobe, and is something I adhere to and teach my clients around the sometimes senseless spending that we can do at times.

And in saying that, I am a big believer in buying one-offs that will translate into spreading the cost per wear... "pffffft whateverrrrr!! I hear you say?" but hear me out!

When we invest in that classic piece costing around $800, like a coat, and it transcends from a season into years, it can seem like a lot up front.  When you’re wearing it 20 times in the first season it averages out to $20 per wear, and over 10 years, $2.00 per wear. Hence the term “investment”. In saying that too, some of my best purchases have been from place such as Zara and H&M and these have lasted the test of time, but it’s all in what you’re looking for.

Now I can’t guarantee that you’ll see depreciation holding like a caravan or boat, but I’ve seen well know sites like Designer Wardrobe on selling peoples coats for $250 when they around 4-5 seasons old. That’s pretty impressive..

So… Let me run through my hot list for you!! I don’t want to overload you with words other than just give you visual orgasms and why..

First up

Got The Knits

This is old school coming up into the present by looking into the old. Reminiscent of what Mum knitted for me in the 80’s.. warm, cosy and smells of love.

I’ve chosen a Neon sweater for something different. I’m in love with this one from Isabel Marant available at Workshop.

Neon can look great with Denim, nude, tan, black and even cobalt blue among other colours in the spectrum. My advice is to start small with something that can be switched out.

The other knit i've chosen is Ulla Johnson for this cutesy chunk style that I can’t get enough of. (Go follow her on Instagram, her designs make me drool)

Sleeveless in Seattle (I'm just trying to be clever here, it could be sleeveless in Auckland for all I care)

I have a sleeveless jacket that I bought years ago, and this would be one of my most VERSATILE pieces I own. I can wear over tees and jeans, over dresses and best of all I can wear my blazers and leather jackets over the top for extra warmth.

Guess What's Back, Back again... Camels Back... Tell a friend

Camel, dark tan, brown, poo brown... … you’re going to see it everywhere this winter, so if you’re going to do it, go for something that you’ll get plenty of wear out of like Slacks, a coat, or knitwear. All of these said pieces you’ll get wear out of and it will never date.

This is a colour that people could be put off by thinking they wouldn't suit it based on complexion, but there are a few shades of it to work with that will suit most. This colour looks amazing with red or any bright colour.

Go all Kim K out, and wear camel top to camel toe... I mean top to toe. We all know camel toes are never a good look.

SHOP WITCHERY JARDIGAN HERE   ( I made that up, it's a jacket cardigan)

The Long and Short of The Puffer

Every year I think the most requested item I get asked about or needing updated for clients is coats and jackets. And generally my advice on this is have one that will stand the test of time, the next year, look for something that is fun and has more personality so that you can revolve with ease, or wear more for casual attire.

Most would shy away from wearing a puffer with a ball gown, but I can assure you anything in fashion goes, so wear it over a dress for sure!!

The olive green is a colour that will never date, and lets face it.. if I had one of these on the rugby side-line you’d likely find all the other Mums huddling up in it too!

Kick Ass Boots

Now shoes are always going to be a personal preference, but have a think about going with something that gets you out of your comfort zone. At the end of the day, they’re just shoes… they’re not going to be the main attraction other than being symbiotic with the rest of your outfit!

Knee highs, ankle.. again like the puffer, go all out and then work on at home learning the wear them with lots of different outfits.

 SHOP TONY BIANCO BOOTS HERE

 SHOP SENSO BOOTS HERE

SHOP MI PIACI BOOTS HERE

The Skirt Chaser

I’m not even going to say much about this…. It’s just cool and it will go with lots! Just check out that street style pic above!!

Sneakers, boots, under the sleeveless vest with a white tee.. it’s endless. You’re welcome

SHOP COUNTRY ROAD SKIRT HERE

The Die Hard Coat

I use this term, because once its died, it will have had one hell of a story to tell with the amount of wears it had by you! Coats are just one of those items that you actually can’t do without so they will turn up in every winter 2020/21/22/23/24/ etc.. etc… fashion story for years to come.

Go for one that you know you will wear over anything, any time, any circumstance or event.

A Tweed one will last a life time, as will a plain wool, or black, but if you’re ballsy, go pink or whatever tickles your outerwear fancy!
